Are you having problems thinking of new color combinations? Do you wish that you could have a reference file for evaluating new color combinations when designing websites? There area many helpful tools and websites out there that list good combination colors but wouldn't you prefer to look at designs implementing these colors? I would. I have created about 45 different simple designs implementing workable color combinations, and I will add to this list at regular intervals. So bookmark this page, and come back when you are in the process of designing a website. Designers may send to me hex numbers and I will create thumbnails ( like the ones below) from these color combinations and add these to our list. An added benefit, Everone who adds a good color combination to this list will have there website listed (only if you want to). If you would prefer to send to us your own thumnail or a link to a website, you can do this instead. It is necessary that you prioritize your website's content to find the most important content. The more important the content, the more necessary that it will be to make these items colorblind-safe. The most important aspects of a website are navigational text (includes image and button text), menus, headers, and subheaders. Make sure that these items are very high in contrast...this means that you should either make these items black and white or opposite ends of the color saturation pole. However, I suggest black and white as the best possible contrasting colors for these critical page elements. Also, with articles and other large format pieces of copy, using dark text on a white background is essential in my opinion. Maybe I'm getting old, but I am sure that we have all read an article online and landed up with a huge migraine headache because the yellow text on blue background was too much for our eyes to take. If you don't want to use black and white for text, then after laying out the page, ask yourself, "Does this text Contrast Well With the Background?!" Use as much color as you want in the surrounding parts of the page, as long as it doesn't take away from the contrast of the text. Usability is an integral part of any website and is just as important as accessibility and search engine friendliness. So many websites are shooting themselves in the foot with poor usability by making it difficult for users to navigate, access material, and even purchase products. Why then, do so many websites simply ignore the usability principles set out? Is it lack of knowledge, awareness, or skill? We're going to be looking into the possible reasons for poor usability in this article. Social design is a subset of design that focuses on the social lives of users. It deals with the activities, behaviors, and motivations of people who work and play together through software interfaces. In the early days of the Web, most sites were read-only, focused on providing information to a single person at a time. Then the Web became read/write, allowing people to save information but still mostly for them acting alone. Now, we're seeing a tremendous amount of social software that allows many people to collaborate and share what they're doing with others. Designing for this social world is social design, and that's what we're talking about here at Bokardo. Thankfully, there are a few things we can do to make this very important search engine optimisation (SEO) job easier... “Because the Internet is so new we still don’t really understand what it is. We mistake it for a type of publishing or broadcasting, because that’s what we’re used to. So people complain that there’s a lot of rubbish online, or that it’s dominated by Americans, or that you can’t necessarily trust what you read on the web. Imagine trying to apply any of those criticisms to what you hear on the telephone. Of course you can’t ‘trust’ what people tell you on the web anymore than you can ‘trust’ what people tell you on megaphones, postcards or in restaurants. Working out the social politics of who you can trust and why is, quite literally, what a very large part of our brain has evolved to do. For some batty reason we turn off this natural scepticism when we see things in any medium which require a lot of work or resources to work in, or in which we can’t easily answer back – like newspapers, television or granite. Hence ‘carved in stone.’ What should concern us is not that we can’t take what we read on the internet on trust – of course you can’t, it’s just people talking – but that we ever got into the dangerous habit of believing what we read in the newspapers or saw on the TV – a mistake that no one who has met an actual journalist would ever make. One of the most important things you learn from the internet is that there is no ‘them’ out there. It’s just an awful lot of ‘us’.”
